Folks, I have a theory.
   After asking on Twitter, and using two different ISPs in two different cities, and trialling different browsers, I have found that in New Zealand, I (and one other Twitter friend) cannot reach our Autocade site without the browser coming up with an error asking one to save the page.
   However, using a US proxy server, there is no problem, and the page functions normally. It actually opens.
   I suspect something is afoot with ISPs in New Zealand blocking certain sites. Can friends reading this confirm this with me, please? The site is autocade.net.
   I remember last month there was quite a bit of furore on Twitter when TelstraClear customers could not reach justinflitter.com (since closed). Again, I had no problem accessing Justin’s site via a proxy server. I simply could not reach it from New Zealand, even though Justin is a New Zealander.

While I can now compose on Vox (not, incidentally, something I could consistently do from Christchurch, either, so we can now conclude the problems were not ISP-specific), is anyone else having problems with the YouTube conduit? I know at least one other user is.
   It gets me a bit worried how things fall down here regularly. But I don’t think we can blame Vox exclusively. I am sure the other site, in this case YouTube, is to blame in part, for perhaps changing its specifications.
   Still, YouTube clips are going to be fewer in number for a while, I expect.

I wonder if Vox is fixing its problems. I have been trying all morning to get the compose screen up, and here it is, after a couple of hours (as opposed to days). The only problem is, two hours on, the inspiration for writing the post has kind of left.

   Meanwhile, this was an oddity from a few days back. I would have loved to have commented on this site, but putting an ad (it’s the scenic view) in front of the comment box (which did not disappear even after you clicked on it) is not smart:

   Mind you, they are not alone in having fumbles. Our Lucire site had some problems, thanks to a cars.com ad that messed up our layout:

Finally. The compose screen has taken two days of refreshes to load.
   So if any of you are wondering why I haven’t blogged, that’s why. I can’t. And waiting two days for the screen to appear is a little longer than the two seconds that it should take.
   After I click ‘Compose’, Vox just loads a blank screen. On viewing the source, there’s nothing there. Yet the browser reports ‘Done’.
   I filed a complaint with Vox today so hopefully they can fix it. However, so far I notice I am alone with this glitch as many of you are able to compose normally.
   Last time this happened, other antipodeans were affected as well, but I see Snowy, Ninja and Robin have been able to post to their Vox blogs lately.
   I think it could be my ISP, but yesterday and today I tried proxy servers and the compose screen still failed to come up. I’ve also tried Firefox and IE8, and Windows XP and Vista, all to no avail. I’ve also cleared the cookies.

While checking for recipes tonight (what of the future of cookbooks?), I came across this one from Microsoft:

This is as disturbing as when I began to see American publications capitalize after colons in 2001 (which is generally incorrect, according to US publishing professionals I asked, though there are exceptions; it is certainly incorrect in English).
   Carbon dioxide is written out in full or with CO, followed by a subscript 2. Technically, it is incorrect to write CO2. Normally in modern typesetting, if we do not have a subscript font, we would use the superior two (²) and move it down a few points. However, surfing today, I noticed a very disturbing C02 (C-zero-two) at both Reuter and the Los Angeles Times.
   I have no idea how this came about. There is no zero in carbon dioxide. This is as bad as those weather pages that insist that the temperature is measured in coulombs (C) and not degrees Celsius (°C).

In case my Firefox 3.5.3 woes were due to Google Toolbar not being up to date, I installed a new one. Bad mistake.
   The new one is difficult to edit in 3.5.3, and each update took 20 to 60 seconds for the menu bar to stop being greyed out. During this editing process—and, in fact, through no intervention of my own—the Google Toolbar spanner icon disappeared.
   So how does one get it back? Ask Google?

Wow, I guess no one uses the Twitter application on Facebook any more. I know I had signed up, but given that it stopped working today, then this does not surprise me. Facebook must be peeved off if it reports that the plug-in has a grand total of zero users:
