The real moment of truth

Comments

funnily enough, we were watching this show during class. Apparently, my trainer had never seen in before and was really interested in it.

I find it painful to watch. Why would you go on a show like this? Do people really need the money? Seriously, I want to ask contestants "How much is your dignity worth? Before or after taxes?"

ick.
Very well said: I would not sell my dignity. Surely no one is that desperate, and if they are, then TV is not the solution.
I totally agree that the US should be more prudent in what programming it syndicates across the globe: between The Moment Of Truth (which I have not watched a single second of, bar the advertisements) and Jackass, you'd have to wring your hands in horror really. It's OK for people like you and I who know enough lovely Americans, on but for most people TV is their single contact point. Ick.

Exactly, Bridget! Television is still influential when it comes to mainstream opinions, and just as they may form ideas about us via Flight of the Conchords, we form ideas about them through their programmes. For these corporations, it’s all about the profit, but if they had a bit of responsibility they might see there are effects on kids and their own nation. The US was once more prudent; and even we were better at purchasing sensible programming at the TV fairs.

Excellent post, Jack.

I'd much rather see my culture represented by FotC than MoT..

Thanks, Nick. Come to think of it, I would rather be represented by Bret and Jemaine than some of our so-called celebrities! (Marc Ellis comes to mind.)
