I was at high school when this aired—I still remember one of my friends doing the ‘Hullo’ that Mel Smith does. Come to think of it, when I was in Switzerland I didn’t watch the news. I wonder how close this was. Paikea?
1. i do find myself gluing myself against store windows looking at the FINE watches 2. somebody was asking us if we'd seen any sign of economic difficulties here - and Steven said, well, maybe there are five less Ferraris on the road these days! - lol! 3. omg - the chocolate - it's unreal - the last time we were here, we were overwhelmed - living here is chocolate heaven - even the normal grocery stores have the best chocolate ever in them - we have at least four bars around at all times - i would be more worried about my waistline, except i think Steven is actually worse than i am - heheh 4. i did find myself admiring a pretty, blue and lethal looking Swiss Army knife in a store window the other day:)
it is nice here - we are, however, spending quite a bit of money - on rent alone - but we wanted to live well since we were only going to be here for a year - we've obviously managed to find excellent food - there's this really fantastic place called Veltlinerkeller that's out of this world - but, going out to a normal good dinner averages 75-90 CHF a pop, so we do that a lot less than we did in Wellington - i do miss the Greek place out by the airport (Muses Taverna - have you been there? - i hope it still exists when we get back), and good Asian food in general - not to mention yum cha at Regal or Majestic - although we did manage to find a place that does half-way decent Peking duck - we need our fix!
Swiss German is super hard to understand - i've picked up some high German, but the Swiss don't love to speak it and would rather try their English instead
So it’s true! But you are right on how pricey everything is. I was paying a lot for dinner there, too, and it was just passable western food. Diesel cost more than petrol when I was there, and the border guards stung me for a year’s road tax even though I was there for a lot less and didn’t even use much of the motorway (the reason they give you for charging road tax—to support motorway maintenance). Being Chinese, I think Regal and Majestic are pretty poor! Haven’t been to Muses, but I will have a look for it, since it would be only 15 minutes’ walk from here if it’s by the airport (if I walk through the under-runway walkway). I used regular German from Germany and everyone picked up I was foreign, plus I had French plates on my car, so it was out with the English. They are so helpful though: I still have a full street map that a Züricher—a total stranger of whom I asked directions—gave me because he reckoned I needed it more than he did.
I think it was filmed in front of a live audience, so it wasn’t canned. But I imagine the lower quality of the web video means it sounds canned. I might blog about Fiat–Chrysler soon. I foresaw it, and even said I saw a Fiat–Big Three tie-up 48 hours before this announcement. I regret not blogging it, as I would have looked prescient.
‘I think they’re wonderful. They have so much courage! Here they are, hurling through space on a molten rock at 67,000 miles an hour, and the only thing that keeps them in their shoes is their misplaced faith in gravity.’—John Lithgow as Prof Dick Solomon, in Third Rock from the Sun
