I prefer to agree with your optimism. However, have you seen this?

A lot of these readings are very general. Most events, or what happens to people, are determined by their compatibility with the year’s signs. These actually change from year to year, and are not associated with any one particular animal. Hence, there is no hard and fast rule that says pig years are bad. I think a lot of these readers and feng shui masters were quoted out of context as many of these predictions require conditions.
If pig years are so bad, then we need to look at 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 and 1995, too. We can pick out disasters and wars in all of them, but I don’t think they could be said to be any better or worse than other years we can choose at random.

Can't move...too many dumplings! Xin Nian Kuai Li! (fortunately for you, you don't have to hear my abysmal attempts at Mandarin, my cousin-in-law who we celebrate with is extremely fluent in several languages and I am barely proficient in one!)

Oh, I love dumplings. I read a story in our paper about a man who went to China for a "dumpling festival", and for days he just walked around and sampled dumplings! That sounded wonderful to me.
