Hong Kong retro film moment: from Dick Emery to 最佳拍檔

Comments

Not really surprised. As much as they were people in Hollywood borrowing "ideas" from Asian sources (I'm looking at you, Walt!), it is inevitable that the opposite would hold true.

You couldn't have picked a more cheeky exemple. LOL!

I believe this was the closest the two films got (even down to dialogue), but it might explain why a lot of Hong Kong comedies are “British” in structure, even when it came to totally original works. And it is cheeky!
I loved Sam Hui and Carl Mak as a kid growing up. The "Aces Go Places" series remains a classic but I think the later ones did get very tired.
This was my favourite series of films as a teen. I liked the first, second and fourth; the third was just way too “out there”, and the others were terrible (the fifth did not work without Sylvia Chang, and renewing the cast for the rest was a mistake).
My cousin saw some of the filming for the fourth (you may recall a lot of it was done on location in New Zealand). I read about it in the newspapers, and even filmed at one of the locations myself!
Glad you enjoyed them as well!
