Gavin Newsom considers run for Calif. governor in ’10

I wonder how Newsom's "man-about-town" image will play in the vast suburbia of California. I haven't always agreed with his stances, but I really appreciate that he seems to stick to his guns and not pander.

I have a feeling that when you begin heading eastward, his urban(e) image won’t hold much sway, and the gay marriage situation could be a stumbling block. But California seems to like the left and it’ll be the liberals who will put Gavin into power if he decides to run in 2010.

Good post Jack. I see Gavin's run for Gov. likely. But, he may have stiff competition from the following: State Attorney General Jerry Brown, LA Mayor, Antonio Villaregosa, and Maria Shiver.

Then, we might even see Michael Moore, Spike Lee, and Oprah running for governor. In California, you just never know. Of Course, actor Ronald Reagan was governor of California and turned out to be a great President.

I thought Brown would be likely, but I wonder about Villaraigosa because his re-election campaign is 2009. The current First Lady of the state is an interesting alternative.
I was there during the ’03 campaign and remember the farce some of the candidates turned it into.
Jack - California is famous for our elections.
You sure are! When Gary Coleman is running, you know it isn’t going to be an ordinary election.
Wow..2010..hard to believe!
I'll have to check that guy out more..I'm an absentee voter, but will be back in CA in 09.

hahaha Gary Coleman...mmm yes quite outta the ordinary.
His big controversy is supporting gay marriage, and performing ceremonies for homosexual couples before that judgement I dissed on this blog last month. But I do like what Gavin has done for healthcare since I see in New Zealand it is possible, so why not somewhere richer like the City?
Meanwhile, the mayoral campaign here is 2010 …
yeah I bet coming from San Fran.
I voted for Sanders twice for San Diego Mayor..he has recently changed his mind on the subject and was quite emotional about it, since his daughter is gay.

Me personally I think it's rather gross and I only thought that they just wanted to benefits...I cannot know nor do I! want to know what its like for them.
But I know Love and Love is what should bind anybody...( just stay away from me ;-)
I hear Gary Coleman makes a pretty good security guard. If Gavin gets the ticket, it could be that he would have won if he hadn't made the gay issue such a big deal. California has already shown that the gay marriage thing is a failure. Gays here have all of the benefits of marriage including health care and spousal rights to make decisions for their partners. The only thing they are lacking is the marriage certificate. Oh, and the fact that they can't force a church to marry them. I think that would be the next step. They've already made private contractors pay for refusing them services that are easily available elsewhere. (photography) Its a short step from equal marriage rights to church weddings. What they want is to force conservatives to legitimize their lifestyle choice.

I haven't looked too closely at the available candidates yet. Probably wait and see who pops up. But a terrible backlash on Newsome since he pretty much put the gay marriage issue on the front and center.
Pat, my view is similar: the gay lifestyle is a private matter, and not for me.
Judge Bob, you may well be right (about both Gary and Gavin!). California law is pretty clear and I was interested to note that the two in support of gay marriage, one of whom was rather arrogant in stating her views, did not come back to dispute my analysis of the judgement. It was, in the history of US jurisprudence, a poor one—giving opponents easy ammunition to knock it down. One cited a poll where the majority in Calif. supports gay marriage; but it’s equally easy to find a poll where the majority does not. Gavin, in my view, jumped the gun on the issue.

Only one little problem, that folks who oppose spouses for life licenses have, is how to refuse all that extra new city revenue. Hmmm.

As for Newsom, it was a move that put him on the map even in NZ!

Money always seems to clash with folks that have negatively fixed moral views on partnering. If its a personal matter, hey, why bother having liscenses at all?

Well, I will have to leave this one for you to hash out personally. Maria Shriver? Why because she has Kennedy lineage?

As an ex-Angelino I wouldn't vote for Villaraigosa and probably would not vote for Newsome either. It was crazy in Calif- I was working there at the time, when Arnold won in the recall election. I never vote for Democrats.
