Ford Mondeo is bigger than Falcon on width, height, wheelbase

Comments

Wow, that's amazing. If you consider the Mondeo is, at a stretch, a Cortina evolution it's easy to see whose grown up/out/long over the years

Mk1 Cortina;
Length: 4274 mm
Width: 1588 mm
Height: 1435 mm
Wheelbase: 2489 mm

I’m like you, Robin: I like tracing these histories (e.g. in Fiat terms, 1100, 128, Ritmo, Tipo, Bravo, Stilo, Bravo). I do regard the Mk I Cortina as the beginning of this line, and to think that folks then called that ‘mid-size’ in the UK (between Anglia and Classic). Cars have really grown. Not much is 1,588 mm wide these days—maybe some Japanese microcars? Even the Ka is 1,631 mm.

Quite a lot bigger! I saw the two but not side by side (a Nissan Xtrail was in the way) and did a similar mental calculation. It just shows: if someone can come in with a little car again, it would find buyers. Suzuki broke the mould with the Swift, and I can see the Tata Nano having huge appeal with a few more mod cons like Bluetooth or MP3 compatibility.
