DDB, DDI and DID
I once met a girl who worked for DDB, the advertising agency, and she had no idea what the initials stood for. I told her that it must be Doyle Dane Bernbach. Today, I wondered what the heck DDI stood for after seeing a newspaper on our scanner. People use it all the time to cite their direct dial numbers. I figured DD was direct dial, but what was I?
A quick squizz at Wikipedia revealed that the original abbreviation is DID: direct inward dialling. It was invented by AT&T, so I guess if it were a proper noun, dialling would have one l to suit the American spelling. Apparently, in Europe, it’s direct dialling inwards, which sounds stupid to me. Who speaks English in Europe, anyway, apart from American and English tourists? (Unless you consider that the UK is part of Europe, but Basil Fawlty would have it otherwise.)
