Ashes to Ashes heads to Prime

Comments

Is that why TVNZ let LOM2 sit on the shelf so long?

It's got a primetime slot so figure it must have rated(?) so wonder why they didn't get the follow-up?

It could be, but my theory is that TV One went on an Americanization experiment, which has proved to have failed. Interestingly, more people seem to know about Life on Mars now than a year ago based on who I run in to, so despite being a fan, I do wonder how many of us watched it. Ugly Betty was a big hit in 2007 and I have a feeling that won its timeslot at the expense of Life on Mars. It would not surprise me if Prime becomes the destination for Anglophiles (still a sizeable part of the population): after all, it has Eastenders as well as the other shows mentioned.
I wonder if Prime's link to Sky, and U.K. TV, helps too? It's obvious TVNZ have pushed it out, re-jigging their schedule, before it becomes totally worthless. Who'd watch LOM2 if Prime had already showed Ashes?

It’s very possible and allows them to tap in to more funds. Also, Sky being a locally based licensee, it’s less Australian than Prime once was. I suspect you are right about TVNZ since the first episode of Ashes to Ashes refers very heavily to the last Life on Mars. And there was still a VO tonight at the end about how some publications listed some American show (I forget which; I mentioned it last week, too).

While I'm glad we'll see it I don't get Prime's programming at times. They have a total hit with Top Gear but stuff around with it - months to show a series, stop/start and out of order screening - and then the endless repeat repeats.

I suppose it's all about money, or lack of it, but you wonder if that's how the hit show is treated, what about the rest!

That’s very true. I get totally frustrated with the episodes. I used to watch them on BBC World before the revamp; I guess they are not on there any more because BBC is making way too much selling it to networks. It’s not helped with the BBC having very bad schedules for Top Gear: one year, they showed sports instead in the UK and had maybe five (?) episodes. For us used to US-style “seasons”, Prime had to fill it up with ‘Best of’ episodes.
Didn’t Prime get Fifth Gear briefly (before it reverted to TV One on a Sunday)? I remember it was on prime-time on a Monday.
