ABC goes old school for US Life on Mars

That US promo lis awful!

I watched it again and saw a 1990s’ typeface as well. It looks like a 2008 designer’s idea of what the 1970s was like. At least the British made some effort to replicate—though an expert can tell the difference—the 1973 æsthetic more faithfully. I wonder if we should put this down to the different cultures: while the US created some great cop shows that decade, I’d say the British have greater nostalgia for theirs.
I loved the retro BBC adverts, they're really well done and having the familiar old logo as a visual really sets it off from the more modern attempts at retro designers are prone too.
I even loved all the promos each week with the ‘BBC 1 Colour’ at the bottom in blue. Only the widescreen aspect gave away the modernity. I hope ABC gets better with its promos—right now US Life on Mars still comes off as a pisstake of the original with that ad.
Yeah, that's a very good point, I'm not sure I like the look of the actor, to be honest - it's like you'd expect a fast show sketch of The Professionals to be.
The guy is too all-American beefcake and in the rejected version of Life on Mars, he came across as that, too. I agree, it would work better as a Professionals send-up. I am sure O’Mara can do the vulnerable and confused look but he needs better direction.
I kept expecting the text on the first frames of the promo to read, ‘What is the secret of Soylent Green?’
That text style of the first frames is so similar, well spotted!
They should have consulted me on the typeface choice!
I don't know typeface, but I know announcers: The announcer on the ABC promo is Andy Geller - www.andygeller.com -
Thanks, Anthony. I always thought I could do those VOs myself! (I have a deep voice!)
No problem... I always thought I could do graphics
